He served during the Spanish-American War as was lieutenant colonel of the Rough Riders Regiment. His political career includes, New York City representative for the New York State Assembly, captain of the National Guard, minority leader of the New York Assembly, Civil Service Commissioner, New York City Police Commissioner, US Navy Assistant Secretary, and Governor of New York. During his presidency, President Roosevelt encouraged American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to create a new design for the Double Eagle Gold Coin based upon their mutual admiration for high-relief style coins of Ancient Greece. Roosevelt took a break during the middle of his political career to become a cowboy and cattle rancher for about 2 years in the mid-1880's. He died in 1919.
