Description
Child’s Staffordshire red transfer ware Charles Allerton “Little May with Apron” tea set circa 1880Whimsical, colorful child’s Staffordshire transfer tea set with Little May holding eggs in her apron.
Low fired ceramic ware with a red transfer pattern of a little girl named May (or Mae )standing in front of farmhouse wearing a dress, a floppy hat, and an apron. She is holding up the front of her apron which is filled with eggs. The central image is framed by a band of flowers and leaves border.
The glaze is shiny and smooth feeling with a small crackle. The shallow foot rings on the tea pot and sugar are not fired. The saucer and teacup have no unglazed areas. The pieces were molded. You can see mold lines on the teapot, sugar, and cup handle. There are four pieces with two lids: teapot, sugar, saucer and teacup.
There is a mark on the base of the saucer, teapot, and sugar that reads STAFFORDSHIRE ENGLAND .

Teacup 2 ½” (6.4 cm) diameter x 2” (5.1 cm) tall
Saucer 4 ½” (11.4 cm) diameter x 1” (2.5 cm) tall

CONDITION
There is a chip on the lip of the sugar and small frits around the spout and mouth of the teapot. There are small frits to the inner flange on the teapot’s lid. There are misses, smudges, and dots to some of the transfers. The pieces still look fresh and bright.
