Due to relative isolation of the Ethiopian highlands much of the jewelry traditionally produced and worn there is unique and its styles have not been influenced by the Muslim traders of the countries which almost surround it. An interesting bynote, Ethiopia is the only African country that was never colonized by a European power. The majority of these highland inhabitants have been Christian for the last 1600 years. Christian symbols like the cross were and are still worn today. The Austrian Maria Theresa thaler has been a source of silver jewelry produced since its introduction in the late 1700's to early 1800's.

Thank you for looking at my auctions. I have travelled in Africa and Yemen for more than 15 years buying silver adornments, old and ancient beads, and ethnographic items. Over the years I have built up a solid rapport with traders and clients. I travel 2-3 times per year to meet with traders who collect and save the items that you see here. My auctions at pangea40 only deal with original art that have been worn or used by the tribal groups mentioned in my description.
